Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, Waco, Texas, plans to build a replacement hospital and a new children's hospital for $165 million to $200 million on 74 acres in Waco. Officials said the 393-bed hospital needs a more compact campus in a growing part of the county. The complex would be located in a new development that may include hotels, restaurants and an auto dealership. Hillcrest had originally intended to relocate to nearby Woodway, Texas. The hospital plans to retain its current facility for services such as rehabilitation and cancer care and possibly for offices and long-term care. Hillcrest said it expects to receive approval for a government-backed loan from the Department of Housing and Urban Development in early 2006 and construction could begin next summer. -- by Laura B.
