Three-hospital Piedmont Healthcare, Atlanta, signed a letter of intent to acquire 143-bed Newnan (Ga.) Hospital, the latest move in a continued expansion outside the Atlanta metropolitan market for the system. If an agreement is reached during a 90-day period of due diligence, Piedmont is expected to replace Newnan's existing facility with a new hospital and provide capital to both support existing programs and develop new technology and services at Newnan, hospital officials said. Piedmont would also assume Newnan's debt, which is about $43 million, a Newnan spokeswoman said. Piedmont's flagship facility is the 426-bed Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. Newnan is located in Coweta County, 25 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta. -- by Michael Romano
