HCA, Nashville, said it plans to file a certificate-of-public-need request with Virginia in January to build a new hospital outside Fredericksburg, Va. The company purchased a 60-acre site near the center of a four-county area projected to have a population of 358,000 by 2010. The area is served by 408-bed Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, but the expected population growth justifies a second hospital, HCA said. A spokesman said the company had not determined the size and cost of the proposed hospital but planned to build a full-service hospital with an emergency department, critical-care beds and diagnostic imaging facilities. -- by Vince Galloro
