Kindred Healthcare, Louisville, Ky., will pay $125 million to acquire six long-term acute-care hospitals with 421 beds, nine skilled-nursing facilities, four assisted-living centers and the right to develop 95 additional long-term acute-care beds from Commonwealth Communities Management, Stoughton, Mass. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter, subject to antitrust clearance and other regulatory approval. The facilities generate about $225 million in annual revenue, and all are in Massachusetts, except for two of the assisted-living centers, which are in Maine. Kindred operates 73 long-term acute-care hospitals, 248 nursing centers and 38 pharmacies. -- by Joseph Mantone
