The Veterans Affairs Department has "blown away" hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years on failed information technology projects, Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) said at a committee hearing on the VA's $2.1 billion IT plan for fiscal 2006. Although members of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee praised the VA's successful electronic medical records system, they also pointed to the failure of a $342 million financial management system and a $600 million compensation and pension system that has yet to be implemented. "Clearly Congress cannot continue to fund failures," Craig said. Under the 2006 budget bill, the VA would be required to reorganize its IT management operations to receive full funding. -- by Andis Robeznieks
