The White House and Senate leaders agreed to support an emergency $750 million package to enable local governments in six storm-damaged Louisiana parishes and three hospitals to pay their employees over the next two months, Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) said. Vitter said the package would redirect money already approved by Congress for Hurricane Katrina relief and loaned to the governments and the hospitals -- West Jefferson Medical Center, Marrero; East Jefferson General Hospital, Metaire; and Ochsner Clinic Foundation, New Orleans. House leaders had not signed off on the package. Both the House and Senate would have to pass the bill before Congress recesses next week. -- by the Associated Press
