VHA, Irving, Texas, acquired Goodroe Healthcare Solutions, Norcross, Ga., a private consulting firm that has been a leading proponent and developer of physician gain-sharing programs. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. VHA said the consulting firm will continue to make its clinical outcomes data available to hospitals outside the VHA alliance. The firm, however, will be integrated with VHA's supply chain services, providing member hospitals with data and analytical tools to help save money on clinical supplies. Gain-sharing, the practice of dividing savings from cost-effectiveness programs between physicians and hospitals, has had its ups and downs over the past decade because of concerns about antikickback laws. But earlier this year, Joane Goodroe, the consultancy's president and chief executive officer, sought and got legal analysis from HHS' inspector general's office that set gain-sharing programs for cardiology supplies in motion. Goodroe previously said her firm was moving into orthopedics but at the time couldn't predict when HHS would issue guidance. -- by Cinda Becker
