Wisconsin hospitals' charity care spending rose 14% to $121 million in 2004, and bad debt climbed 14.5% to $344 million, according to the Wisconsin Hospital Association. The state's hospitals reported overall operating expenses of $10.5 billion and operating revenue of $11.3 billion in 2004, the WHA said. The average patient-care margin held relatively steady at 4.2%. Inpatient admissions were up 7%, and outpatient revenue rose 12.5%. Hospital payrolls in the state exceeded $5.1 billion, the WHA said.
