The waiting room of a cancer diagnostic clinic can be a place fraught with tension. But the architects of the Tansey Breast Center in New Orleans did their best to ensure that the design of this clinic would integrate as many things as it could to create a sense of peace and reflection. The Tansey waiting room uses warm-colored woods throughout the clinic, from the waiting room ceilingsand front desk to the patients" lockers in the radiology changing area.
"The architecture has great integrity"" says judge Peter Ellis, Whether wall, ceiling or bookcase, it is all dissolved with the same language, simply transformed to every architectural element of space."
Designers match warm and cool colors for the 15,000-square-footclinic to generate a serene atmosphere. The doors to the radiology room are not a cold metal or gray, but a hardy cherry-stained wood that complements the theme. Speakers deliver the soft sound of rushing water into the lobby, giving the clinic a spalike atmosphere. "It gives a soothing feel, which is important here," Ellis says. "But it comes through abstraction."
The clinic, which was started in November 2000 and completed in August the following year, has facilities for surgeons and radiologists to work collaboratively through diagnosis.
Katherine Voss, a spokeswoman for Ochsner Clinic Foundation, which commissioned the building, says the Tansey Center wasn't damaged by Hurricane Katrina or the subsequent flooding of the city.
