Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, Fla., has notified Florida regulators of plans to build a 260-bed acute-care hospital in Northeast Miami-Dade County. The 756-bed Mount Sinai, a not-for-profit teaching hospital, would transfer 260 of its licensed beds to a newly constructed facility, according to a letter of intent filed with Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration. Mount Sinai officials will file details for its plans with Florida regulators by late October and expect an initial decision on a certificate of need as early as mid-December, according to company financial documents. Mount Sinai launched a turnaround plan in 2002 after struggling financially in recent years, its 2004 financial statements show. -- by Melanie Evans
