Community Health Systems, Brentwood, Tenn., said it has executed a definitive agreement to acquire 105-bed Sunbury (Pa.) Community Hospital. No terms were disclosed. The deal is expected to close early in the fourth quarter of 2005, Community said. The board of not-for-profit Sunbury announced a letter of intent to sell to the for-profit system in July after a deal to sell to another for-profit, Essent Healthcare in Nashville, fell through. Sunbury would be Community's ninth hospital in Pennsylvania. Community has 70 hospitals in 21 states overall.
Essent, meanwhile, announced that it has signed an asset purchase agreement to acquire 54-bed Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, Pa. Terms were not disclosed. The parties hope to complete the deal within 30 days. Privately held Essent owns five hospitals in four states. -- by Vince Galloro
