Northwest Texas Healthcare System, Amarillo, and RehabCare Group, St. Louis, announced plans to open a 44-bed inpatient physical rehabilitation hospital in spring 2006. The companies will be renovating a closed behavioral health facility at a still-unknown cost, according to a news release. The hospital will be located in Amarillo, an area with few rehabilitation services. Trauma patients from Northwest Texas, a 393-bed medical center with a Level III trauma center, will be able to use the hospital. RehabCare expects to treat 450 patients in the first year and up to 700 annually by the third year. The hospital will be the third free-standing rehabilitation facility in Texas operated by RehabCare, which manages rehabilitation services in about 900 hospitals and skilled-nursing facilities in 38 states. -- by Joseph Mantone
