The Catholic Health Association, St. Louis, named Sister Carol Keehan as its new president and chief executive officer, replacing the Rev. Michael Place, who left the job in December 2004. Keehan, 60, a member of the Daughters of Charity religious order, is full-time board chairwoman of Sacred Heart Health System, Pensacola, Fla., a post she took last year after stepping down as longtime president and CEO of Providence Hospital, Washington. She will resign from Sacred Heart. CHA spokesman Fred Caesar said Keehan's salary was not being disclosed publicly. Place earned $833,109 in salary, benefits and expenses in 2003. Keehan's salary will be paid to her religious order, Caeser said. American Hospital Association President Richard Davidson, who has known Keehan for 25 years, said, "It's the exact right appointment. This is a leader who can stand up and be a very strong advocate." In June, Keehan finished a one-year term as CHA chairwoman. She will be based in Washington and commute to St. Louis a few days a week, the CHA said. -- by Paul Barr
