The Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission voted today to close both 261-bed Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, and Brooks City-Base, San Antonio, Texas, which is home to the School of Aerospace Medicine, according to the Department of Defense. The commission also voted to convert 275-bed Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, to an ambulatory-care center, the Associated Press said. As previously announced, Walter Reed's operations would be transferred to the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md., which would be renamed Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The commission's decisions are subject to approval or rejection in whole by President Bush and Congress. -- by Paul Barr
