A settlement between Tenet Healthcare Corp., Dallas, and uninsured and underinsured patients who claim they were overcharged for care provided at Tenet facilities has been approved by U.S. Superior Court Judge Wendell Mortimer in Los Angeles. Under the settlement, Tenet will issue refunds of an undisclosed amount but didn't admit to any wrongdoing. Lawyers for the plaintiffs said the suit was filed in 2002 and alleged that Tenet overcharged uninsured and underinsured patients for prescription drugs and other medical products and services at 114 hospitals in 16 states. The settlement class includes all uninsured patients who received medically necessary services at any of Tenet's hospitals from June 15, 1999, to Dec. 31, 2004, and overpaid for those services. Members of the class still could appeal the settlement. -- by Joseph Mantone
