Two professional organizations plan to convene a steering committee in September to develop a voluntary accreditation system for state and local public health agencies. There is no national standard for state public health departments, and fewer than 10 states have standards for local agencies, said Patrick Libbey, executive director of National Association of County and City Health Officials. The group and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials are selecting the steering committee and expect to recommend accreditation standards in a year. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation are funding the effort. -- by Joseph Mantone
