The two hospitals in Johnstown, Pa., officially became one after the state attorney general approved the deal, allowing 339-bed Conemaugh Memorial Medical to acquire 212-bed UPMC Lee Regional for $46.7 million. Officials said the deal would have a net economic impact on the region of $23 million by 2010, including the creation of 371 jobs. Memorial is hiring former Lee employees and so far has made about 850 offers out of the about 900 positions, officials said. A UPMC spokeswoman said the deal came about because officials believed a single hospital system would serve the community better. -- by Cinda Becker
