The board of not-for-profit Sunbury (Pa.) Community Hospital said it signed a letter of intent to sell the hospital to for-profit Community Health Systems, Brentwood, Tenn. -- three months after it had an agreement in place to sell to another for-profit, Essent Healthcare, Nashville. The letter signals the beginning of exclusive negotiations with Community, the hospital board said. No deadline was set for reaching a final agreement. An Essent spokeswoman said the company decided that Sunbury wasn't a good fit after further examination. The spokeswoman said Essent and the hospital agreed to part ways. Sunbury's board cited Community's experience in operating similar hospitals. Community has 69 hospitals in 21 states; eight are in Pennsylvania. Essent operates five hospitals in four states. -- by Vince Galloro
