The White House will be asking for an additional $300 million in funding for veterans' healthcare today, according to a spokesman for Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho), chairman of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee.
Today's request would come less than two weeks after the White House asked for $975 million in additional funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs, targeted for healthcare.
That request led the House to pass a bill giving the VA the full $975 million. The Senate recently voted to give the department $1.5 billion more in funding after it was discovered that the VA had incorrectly forecast its budget needs, not adequately taking into account the number of veterans returning from the Middle East who require healthcare. The Senate and House now must reconcile these amounts.
The VA said last month it needs more than $1 billion to provide healthcare to veterans.
