The National Committee for Quality Assurance is rolling out five new quality measures as additions to its 2006 Health Plan Data and Information Set. The measures address overuse of antibiotics for chronic bronchitis; effective use of spirometry to diagnose chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders; inappropriate use of certain medications among the elderly, such as barbiturates; and appropriate monitoring of elderly and children on long-term medications. The measures have been pilot-tested by some health plans and will be incorporated into HEDIS for general data collection in 2006, an NCQA spokesman said. The data will be publicly reported in 2007. -- by Joseph Conn
