Independent Sector, a coalition of charities, foundations and corporate-giving programs, released a checklist to be used by tax-exempt organizations to ensure transparent and ethical governance. The checklist follows a June 22 report to Congress by the group's Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, which recommended more than 120 actions for not-for-profits, Congress and the Internal Revenue Service. Elements of the nine-point checklist include: adopt a statement of values and code of ethics; hire an independent auditor or accountant; publish financial and governance statements online; and ensure directors understand their financial responsibilities. The checklist and report to Congress are available online at independentsector.org. -- by Melanie Evans
