Three-hospital Baptist Health, Montgomery, Ala., will become an affiliate of UAB Health System, Birmingham, Ala., officials announced. The collaboration comes about 15 months after UAB took over management of the system's three hospitals -- 342-bed Baptist Medical Center South, Montgomery; 138-bed Baptist Medical Center East, Montgomery; and 47-bed Prattville (Ala.) Baptist Hospital.
Under an agreement signed Wednesday, the three hospitals were transferred by Baptist into a newly created healthcare authority formed by the University of Alabama board of trustees that includes six members selected by the university and five by Baptist Health. The Baptist name and its faith-based mission will not change, officials said.
"The relationship between UAB and Baptist Health has grown in scope in the past year," said David Hoidal, chief executive office of the UAB Health System. "We have found a multitude of instances whereby the two systems are able to benefit each other in the public interest."
