Ownership of Mercy Hospital of Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) will be transferred to two-hospital Geisinger Health System under an agreement with Mercy's parent, two-hospital Catholic Healthcare Partners. Geisinger already operates 143-bed Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre. Regulatory approvals are expected in September. Officials declined to disclose the exact terms of the deal but said that every Mercy employee will be offered employment. Mercy officials said the decision to transfer ownership of the 195-bed hospital after more than 108 years in Wilkes-Barre was the result of "changing demographics and mounting economic demands." Geisinger has committed to abide by Catholic doctrine for services provided on the Mercy campus and will donate a percentage of operating revenue to charity care, officials said. -- by Cinda Becker
