A group of local physicians moved one step closer to resuscitating Southwest Hospital and Medical Center, Atlanta, when Judge James Massey of U.S. Bankruptcy Court approved the physicians' bid for the bankrupt, 100-bed hospital in south Fulton County. The hospital, which filed for bankruptcy protection in September 2004 with about $25 million in debt, is one of only a handful of black-owned hospitals in the nation. Southwest Doctors Group, made up largely of black physicians who have practiced in Atlanta for decades, must come up with about $12 million by July 5 to complete the acquisition. -- by Michael Romano
