Patients covered by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa, Des Moines, will be able to continue receiving care at hospitals in the University of Iowa Health Care system under an agreement signed by the two organizations, ending a stormy half year of negotiations. Wellmark Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Forsyth had resigned in January as president of Iowa's Board of Regents, which oversees both the university and health system, amid complaints about conflicts of interest. Forsyth's resigned following criticism that it was a conflict for him to oversee organizations negotiating a sizable managed-care contract . The new agreement calls for Wellmark to pay University of Iowa Health Care an incremental reimbursement of $8.6 million, though the total amount paid will depend on related patient volume. -- by Paul Barr
