Eastern Health System, Birmingham, Ala., signed a management consulting deal with Seton Health Corp. of North Alabama, an affiliate of St. Vincent's Hospital, the city's oldest healthcare facility. St. Vincent's and three-hospital Eastern have been considering "strategic partnerships," including a possible merger, and their boards agreed Monday to continue confidential discussions, a news release said. Under the consulting arrangement, Seton will help manage Eastern Health's facilities beginning in July. The announcement followed about nine months of negotiations. "This agreement will provide the opportunity to potentially strengthen and grow both systems," St. Vincent's President and Chief Executive Officer Curtis James said in the news release. The hospital is a member of Ascension Health. -- by Michael Romano
