Illinois intends to publish by next April facility-specific outpatient and inpatient surgery costs, inpatient mortality, nosocomial infection rates and nurse-staffing ratios. A new law requires hospitals and surgery centers to report average list prices for a marketbasket of 30 outpatient surgical procedures and authorizes funding for two 2003 laws requiring the other reporting. The state Department of Public Health will run the programs and publish the data, using money from sales of the data to researchers and commercial interests, a department spokeswoman said. -- by Joseph Conn
