Illinois residents will have more access to information about outpatient medical care under a new law signed Tuesday by Gov. Rod Blagojevich that allows the Department of Public Health to post on its Web site price and performance information about outpatient centers.
"Consumers have a right to know how much medical procedures cost and how much experience medical facilities have in performing the procedures," Blagojevich said in a press release.
The information could help patients make better decisions about their healthcare, he said.
The department has been allowed since 2003 to post similar information about inpatient services, but those efforts stalled because of unclear guidelines and a lack of funding, agency spokeswoman Tammy Leonard said.
The inpatient and outpatient information is expected to be available on the Web site by next spring after new regulations for data collection are set and the information is compiled, Leonard said.
