New York City Health and Hospitals Corp. fired Carlos Perez, network senior vice president and executive director at Bellevue Hospital Center since 1997, for among other matters, admitting to investigators that he accepted a personal loan from a vendor doing business with the company. Health and Hospitals Corp. declined to name the vendor and said it could not provide more details at this time. Frank Cirillo, the public hospital system's senior vice president of operations and chief operating officer, will fill Perez's post at Bellevue on an interim basis.
The termination followed disciplinary actions last week at Jacobi Medical Center after an investigation found the hospital failed to notify some women of abnormal pap smears. Health and Hospitals Corp.'s acting president. Alan Aviles, terminated Jacobi Executive Director Joseph Orlando, saying he had lost confidence in Orlando after reviewing the situation. The deputy director of nursing services responsible for women's health services also was terminated and other personnel were disciplined. Jacobi officials determined that 307 women might not have been informed of abnormal Pap results after notification practices changed in December 2003. -- by Cinda Becker
