St. Luke's Episcopal Health System, Houston, said it was considering a possible merger and in "preliminary, non-binding exploratory discussions with a number of other Houston providers." The statement followed a Houston Chronicle report that St. Luke's was considering two possible scenarios for a sale or merger, involving either Memorial Hermann Healthcare System or a joint effort of Texas Children's and Methodist Hospital. St. Luke's officials declined to comment on the specifics of the report. Nine-hospital Memorial Hermann said it is in routine talks with several healthcare institutions, including St. Luke's. Methodist said it was not negotiating with St. Luke's about an affiliation but was in talks with other institutions. -- by Paul Barr
