Consolidation in the dialysis industry continued as Renal Care Group, Nashville, announced that it signed a definitive agreement to acquire the dialysis facilities managed by Preferred Medical Group, a Duluth, Ga.-based company that manages 14 dialysis facilities. Terms of the deal were not released, but Renal Care said it should close on the deal on June 1. Earlier in May, Fresenius Medical Care, a Germany-based dialysis provider, announced that it planned to buy Renal Care, and in December, DaVita, El Segundo, Calif., announced it was acquiring Gambro Healthcare in a $3.05 billion deal. In a news release, Renal Care said the deal to buy Preferred was in the works before the Fresenius deal was announced. Renal Care currently owns about 425 outpatient dialysis facilities and provides dialysis services in about 210 hospitals. -- by Joseph Mantone
