Aetna, Hartford, Conn., agreed to buy ActiveHealth Management, New York, a clinical management and analysis company, for $400 million in cash. The purchase, subject to customary closing conditions and antitrust approval, is set to close by the end of June. Aetna, a customer of ActiveHealth since 2002, said it will keep the company as a branded standalone business serving its existing clientele of health plans, employers, state Medicaid agencies and Medicare programs. Aetna said it offers ActiveHealth's CareEngine services to its own customers under the MedQuery label. CareEngine compiles patient information from a variety of sources and analyzes the information against evidence-based standards, uncovering opportunities to improve patient care and avoid potential medical errors, according to ActiveHealth's Web site. -- by Paul Barr
