St. Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta announced it will spend $311 million to add 64 beds to its capacity of 346 and build a new five-story heart and vascular center. The project is expected to be completed in 2009.
Meanwhile, two-hospital Children's Healthcare of Atlanta continues to work out the financial details to take over operations of Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital in downtown Atlanta. Officials announced the plan last year but must raise $5 million for renovations and an additional $4.5 million in government funding to cover annual deficits at Hughes Spalding, a spokeswoman said. No time frame was announced. "We're hoping as soon as possible," the spokeswoman said. -- by Michael Romano
