Akron (Ohio) General Health System expects to close this weekend on its $1.35 million purchase of 188-bed Edwin Shaw Hospital for Rehabilitation, Akron, from Summit County, a deal negotiated in 2003. The deal includes the hospital business but not the 110-acre hospital campus in southeast Akron. Edwin Shaw should be relocated to Akron General's main campus within four years, spokesman Joseph Jerek said. The rehabilitation hospital began as a tuberculosis sanitarium in 1908 and became fully owned by Summit County in 1918. It had a net loss of $12 million and an operating loss of $19 million from 1999 through 2003, according to the American Hospital Directory. -- by Mark Taylor
