The CMS said it would begin to distribute money set aside to reimburse hospitals for emergency care given to illegal immigrants.
The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 allocated $1 billion for the effort for fiscal 2005 through 2008. Of the $250 million distributed this year, California will receive the largest amount, $70.8 million, followed by Texas, at $46 million.
The CMS last fall backed down from a proposal to require hospitals to document patients' immigration status in order to receive the supplemental funding. Read the latest CMS information on the program.
