Humana, Louisville, Ky., announced that David Jones Jr. replaced his father as board chairman, effective immediately. As previously planned, the senior David Jones, 73, retired at the close of the health insurer's annual shareholder meeting, ending nearly 44 years at the helm of the company he co-founded in 1961. Jones Jr., 47, has been vice chairman of Humana's board since 1996 and is chairman and managing director of Chrysalis Ventures, a Louisville-based venture capital firm he founded in 1993. Humana is one of the nation's largest publicly traded health insurers, with $13.1 billion in annual revenue and 7 million members in 15 states and Puerto Rico.
Harris County Hospital District, Houston, named interim COO and CEO David Lopez as president and CEO, ending a more than yearlong search. Lopez, 52, was named interim CEO after John Guest resigned in March 2004 after disputes with the board. Lopez said in a statement that he expects to reorganize certain departments, streamline processes and choose a replacement COO. Lopez will be offered a two-year contract. The district owns three Houston hospitals and several clinics. ... Glenn Flake has resigned as CEO of Newnan (Ga.) Hospital to pursue other interests, the hospital says. Flake, 58, will continue to provide consulting services to the hospital for the next year on an as-needed basis, according to a statement. Richard Hubbard III, the 66-year-old retired CEO of Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta, will serve as interim CEO while a search is conducted. ... Jeff Ashin has been named interim president and CEO of Mercy Hospital Fairfield (Ohio), replacing Mark Hood, 50, who became CEO of Memorial Hermann Heart and Vascular Institute-Southwest, Houston. Ashin, 51, will continue to serve in his current position as executive director of the Heart Hospital at Mercy Fairfield. ... Mark Sims has been named CEO of Parkridge East Hospital and COO of Parkridge Medical Center, both in Chattanooga, Tenn. Sims replaces Jerri Underwood, who was recently promoted to chief nursing executive for Parkridge's three campuses. Sims, 38, had been CEO of Grandview Medical Center in Jasper, Tenn. All are HCA facilities. The Grandview CEO post is being filled on an interim basis by George Asbell, a veteran HCA executive. ... Brett McClung, 37, is the new president of Harris Methodist Northwest Hospital, Azle, Texas, part of Texas Health Resources. McClung had been vice president of ambulatory services, support services and business development for affiliated Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital. ... Jack Buckley Jr. has been named president and CEO of St. Joseph Health System in Bryan, Texas, replacing Sister Gretchen Kunz, who takes over the St. Joseph Foundation. Buckley has been CEO of St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.
Renal Care Group, Nashville, announced that Raymond Hakim, 60, is resigning as senior executive vice president of clinical affairs and chief medical officer effective May 30, 2006. Hakim will help the dialysis provider find a successor.
Timothy Trysla, senior policy adviser to CMS Administrator Mark McClellan, will join the healthcare practice of Alston & Bird, Washington. Trysla, 38, has nearly 15 years of health policy experience in the private sector, as well as the executive and legislative branches of the government. At the CMS, Trysla served as a congressional and White House liaison and advised McClellan on prescription drug and Medicare reform issues. He had served under previous CMS chief Tom Scully, who later joined Alston & Bird. ... Former Baxter International Chairman and CEO Harry Kraemer Jr. has joined private equity investment firm Madison Dearborn Partners, Chicago, as an executive partner. Kraemer, who left Baxter in April 2004, is an adjunct professor of management and strategy at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Chicago.
