Medical malpractice insurance for Pennsylvania's 182 hospitals cost $636 million in fiscal 2004, or 2.67% of statewide net patient revenue, according to the state's Health Care Cost Containment Council. Sixty-seven percent of hospital malpractice expenditures resulted from a variety of self-insurance arrangements. Costs varied significantly by region, with hospitals in southeast Pennsylvania paying the most -- 3.94% of net patient revenue. That was more than double the 1.6% average in the lowest-cost region, the eight-county Pittsburgh area. Read the council's research brief. -- by Cinda Becker
