Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, named Larry Goldberg executive director and CEO of flagship Vanderbilt University Hospital. Goldberg, 43, has been vice president of hospital operations at 624-bed Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago. He replaces Mark Penkhus, who left in 2002 for an administrative post at Oregon Health & Science University, Portland. The position was held open until the new children's hospital on the Vanderbilt campus opened and the space in the adult hospital formerly occupied by the children's operations was renovated, officials said. ... Ron Laxton has been promoted to administrator of Washoe Medical Center, Reno, Nev. Laxton, 52, replaces Brian Ivie, who resigned last year. Laxton will keep his current title of chief nursing officer. ... Scott Becker has been named CEO of Conemaugh Health System and flagship Memorial-Medical Center, Johnstown, Pa., effective May 2. For Becker, 49, it's a homecoming, as he is a Johnstown native. Most recently, he was vice president of hospital and mid-market sales at Highmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Pittsburgh. Becker has also held top hospital posts, including COO of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Health System. He replaces Richard Salluzzo, former chief medical officer and CEO of Conemaugh, who left last fall to become president and CEO of Wellmont Health System, Kingsport, Tenn.
Laura Robbins has been named the national chairwoman of the Arthritis Foundation, Atlanta. Robbins, 50, has more than 20 years of experience in arthritis research and education. She is vice president of education and academic affairs at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, associate scientist in the research division and associate scientist and professor in the clinical epidemiology and health services research program at Weill Medical College at Cornell University. She replaces as chairwoman Carol Klimas, an executive with KeyBank, a Cleveland-based investment bank.
Donna Lynne has been named president of Kaiser Permanente's Colorado region. Lynne replaces Chris Binkley, the Colorado region president for the past six years. Binkley will take a position with the national Kaiser Permanente organization, supporting hospital strategy and facility planning efforts across the country. Lynne has been president and CEO of an HMO owned by Group Health, New York, and is a former senior vice president of New York's Health and Hospitals Corp. under former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. ... In the latest of several recent management changes, WellPoint, Indianapolis, named Stuart Campbell president and CEO of its Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Missouri and Wisconsin, effective April 1. Campbell, 43, was formerly WellPoint's senior vice president of strategic planning and management process. In Missouri, he replaces Angela Braly, 43, who was promoted to executive vice president, general counsel and chief public affairs officer for WellPoint. In Wisconsin, he replaces Rebecca Kapustay, 54, who will retire after 25 years with the company and its predecessors. David Frick, WellPoint's executive vice president and chief legal and administrative officer, will also retire, effective July 1. Frick, 60, played a key role in the creation of WellPoint, which was formed Nov. 30, 2004, through the $16.4 billion merger of Anthem, Indianapolis, and WellPoint Health Networks, Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Mark Liebner has resigned as CFO of VistaCare, a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based national hospice company. Liebner, 52, has accepted a position with Albuquerque-based rehabilitation company Ernest Health. He will be replaced at VistaCare on an interim basis by Chief Accounting Officer Jon Steging, 56.
