Most hospitals and healthcare systems say they have made great strides toward achieving compliance with the privacy regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, but compliance with the security rules is another matter. Four in 10 respondents to a survey by the American Health Information Management Association indicated their operations were fully compliant with HIPAA's privacy regulations, up from 20% a year ago. Better than nine in 10 said their shops were at least 85% compliant. Meanwhile, the April 20 implementation deadline for the HIPAA data security portion approaches. Just 17% of respondents to the AHIMA survey claimed complete compliance; 43% said they were 85% to 95% compliant; 26% reported being halfway there; and 12% said they had more than halfway to go. -- by Joseph Conn
