More doctors are becoming part of a Medicare insurance provider in Miami-Dade County, Fla., where high utilization and a large number of seniors have helped boost reimbursement.
Physicians make up almost 75% of investors in DoctorCare, a Medicare plan that opened in January with about 500 members and 650 physicians, said Esther Surujon, the company's president and chief executive officer.
DoctorCare became the second state-licensed, provider-sponsored Medicare organization in Miami-Dade County, joining 4-year-old Preferred Care Partners. Physicians own about 25% of Preferred Care, which has about 7,300 members and a network of about 1,000 doctors.
"We have eliminated all those administrative hurdles and barriers for patients and doctors to obtain the care they need," Surujon said. "Under our model, doctors have the ultimate decisionmaking ability."
