Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, named Larry Goldberg executive director and chief executive officer at Vanderbilt University Hospital, the main hospital on the 705-bed Vanderbilt campus. Meanwhile, HCA, also based in Nashville, said it hired Cheryl White Mason as vice president for litigation, effective today. Goldberg, 43, will leave his post as vice president for hospital operations at 744-bed Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, and begin work at Vanderbilt in mid-May. Prior to joining Northwestern in 1998, Goldberg worked in the healthcare consulting practices of Deloitte & Touche and Ernst & Young. Mason, 53, will oversee the litigation section of HCA's legal department. Previously, she was chief of the civil liability management branch for the city of Los Angeles, overseeing more than 80 lawyers. Between 1987 and 2002, Mason was a litigation partner at O'Melveny & Myers and became the first woman elected to the law firm's management committee. -- by Vince Galloro
