The Greater New York Hospital Foundation, the not-for-profit arm of the Greater New York Hospital Association, has developed an online directory designed to connect uninsured and underinsured New Yorkers with available resources. The so-called Health Information Tool for Empowerment, or HITE, is being rolled out to health and social-service professionals with information about free and low-cost programs and services. GNYHA officials say it is the first online directory of its kind. The site allows professionals to search for resources by ZIP code, services offered, medical conditions treated and languages spoken. HITE is being piloted in three communities where a combined total of half a million people are uninsured. Following an independent evaluation by the New York Academy of Medicine, the foundation plans to expand HITE to other communities in the state. The information is available free in a user-friendly directory. -- by Cinda Becker
