A Los Angeles jury found Nellcor, a Tyco Healthcare Group company, guilty of antitrust violations in a case brought by a competing maker of pulse oximeters, Masimo Corp. The jury awarded Masimo $140 million in damages, which will automatically be tripled. Nellcor said it would appeal and would pay no monetary damages until exhausting all appeals. Masimo alleged that its technology was limited in the marketplace by Nellcor's contracts with hospital group purchasing organizations and other contracting practices. Nellcor said the verdict would have "absolutely no impact" on its ongoing ability to serve customers. -- by Cinda Becker
