WebMD, Elmwood Park, N.J., noted a substantial increase in online continuing medical education through its portal Medscape. In a conference call on the company's earnings, Chief Executive Officer Kevin Cameron said the number of healthcare professionals completing continuing education through Medscape rose 35% in the fourth quarter to 269,500 and 59% in 2004 to 926,000. WebMD reported net income of $19.7 million, or 6 cents per share, in the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2004, up 88% from $10.5 million, or 3 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue increased 19% to $307.6 million. The company earned $39.3 million, or 12 cents per share, in the year, compared with a net loss of $17 million, or 5 cents per share, in 2003.
