New York United Hospital Medical Center, Port Chester, N.Y., filed for bankruptcy and will shutter its doors in 90 to 120 days subject to state health department approval. Officials said the 203-bed hospital, which has operated in the red for more than a decade, could not surmount $80 million in debt and declining volumes. The hospital will stop admitting new patients and cease all elective procedures on Friday. Reasons for closing include an aging building, systems and equipment; decreased reimbursements; pension plan funding; competition from other hospitals; and a decline in utilization and surgeries. The hospital board will continue to work with the state health department on the development of a plan for a new healthcare facility in Port Chester that would be better sized and structured, officials said in a news release. The hospital recently replaced its president with Phillip Dionne, a consultant from Kurron Shares of America, under a three-year agreement. -- by Cinda Becker
