The Alexandria, Va.-based American Medical Group Association added about 5,000 physicians and 30 new medical groups to its roster of members this year, slightly improving the rate of growth in the previous year, the trade group announced today. The AMGA, which represents most of the nation's largest medical groups, now has total membership of about 70,000 physicians in 257 groups.
In the past three years, AMGA's group membership has grown by about 13%, and the number of physicians represented has increased by nearly 25%. Only eight medical groups have dropped their membership during that period. Donald Fisher, president and CEO of the association, said the group has exceeded goals for this year, adding that the numbers are in "stark contrast to many other healthcare organizations, which are struggling to keep members."
The typical AMGA member has about 260 physicians and 13 satellite medical facilities.
