Three top attorneys left the criminal defense team of Richard Scrushy but will continue to work on civil cases against the former chief executive officer of HealthSouth Corp., Birmingham, Ala., accused of directing a multibillion-dollar accounting fraud at the rehabilitation provider. A spokesman for the attorneys' law firm, Chadbourne & Parke, said the withdrawal of Abbe Lowell, Thomas Sjoblom and Scott Balber was a mutual decision by Scrushy and the lawyers. The civil cases are on hold until after the criminal trial, which is expected to start in January. Alabama lawyers Jim Parkman and Martin Adams were named to Scrushy's defense team in September, and Parkman is likely to be the lead trial attorney. -- by Joseph Mantone
