More than 40% of private-practice physicians surveyed said they spend the equivalent of about one day a week managing business responsibilities, according to a Medical Practice Monitor survey by OPEN, a small-business network division of American Express Co. About one-fourth of doctors in private practice said it was "extremely challenging" to balance their patient-care and business responsibilities, while about 58% described their dual role as "challenging." The survey was based on online interviews with a nationally representative sample of 356 medical doctors in private practice, about 300 specialists and 100 dentists. Many physicians said they needed to better develop their business skills, with 74% identifying financial management as an area in which they would like to improve and 59% identifying marketing. -- by Michael Romano
