Beverly Enterprises, Fort Smith, Ark., said its third-quarter earnings climbed to $24.4 million, or 22 cents per share, more than double earnings of $10 million, or 9 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. The growth was driven by both increased revenue and continued cost controls, the company said. The results include net income from discontinued operations of $3.2 million in the 2004 quarter and $10 million in the 2003 quarter. Revenue from continuing operations rose 10.2% to $508.2 million. Beverly operates 354 skilled-nursing facilities, 18 assisted-living centers and 45 hospice and home-care centers. -- by Paul Barr
