One of California's biggest medical groups has added to its size and geographic range, acquiring a 500-physician IPA in a move that expands its market reach to eight counties.
Hill Physicians Medical Group in San Ramon, Calif., will grow to about 2,600 physicians in a network serving more than 400,000 health plan members through its acquisition of Stockton-based Delta IPA, the biggest IPA in neighboring San Joaquin County. The merger will take effect Dec. 1.
"There's been a lot of consolidation in healthcare, and the physician market has been lagging behind," said Darryl Cardoza, the chief operating officer of Hill Physicians. With only about 70,000 members in one county, Delta "wanted a bigger platform, and they decided we were the right platform," Cardoza added.
No financial details were released. "It was not financially driven -- it was strategic," Cardoza said.
